Operations Security (OPSEC):

rebranding how we protect the community

THE PROBLEM

In 2020, the 501st Combat Support Wing was plagued by ineffective OPSEC, leaving many vulnerable to phishing, scams, and social engineering.

I was consulted to overhaul the base’s cyber security awareness program, educating military and civilian personnel on proper OPSEC methods.

THE SOLUTION

I designed a 12-month campaign synthesizing ineffective instructional briefings into digital media content and training exercises.

Program assessment showed a correlation between our campaign and a 33% decrease in risky behavior.

Operations Security (OPSEC)
A systematic and proven process intended to deny potential adversaries information about capabilities and intentions by identifying, controlling, and protecting generally unclassified evidence of the planning and execution of sensitive activities. OPSEC is often correlated to the branding of the Purple Dragon, a historic figure in military counter-intelligence.

The OPSEC challenges facing the community were due to an improper understanding of what sensitive information is, how that information could be used by potential adversaries, and the methods protect it.

My awareness campaign was designed to educate community members about the importance of vagueness in public information while providing them with consistent, recognizable branding.

the new

Our campaign aimed to simplify the complexity of OPSEC and empower our target audience to know how to effectively protect their own sensitive information.

Opt-out quarterly newsletters were delivered to all military members, civilians, and contractors.

Educational material included interactable InfoGraphics, delivered through the 501 CSW App.

Push notifications allowed for easy access to monthly InfoGraphics.
